MAY 2015 EDITION

Dear Colleague,

Greetings from Cologne!

With 10,000 additional farmers from Kenya and India achieving certification, we have seen the highest monthly increase in producers under GLOBALG.A.P. Certification in our history, helping us surpass the 150,000 mark globally. Most of the newcomers are smallholder farms that have benefited from the newly introduced smallholder registration fee level as well as the recognition of elements of contract growing in their Option 2 Group Certification structure. We expect these numbers to rise further through our localg.a.p. program, which one of our retail members recently introduced in Botswana.

With more than 1,100 producers under certification, our flowers and ornamentals sector has also been steadily growing in the past months. This is in response to mounting retailer demand for added assurance, including toom Baumarkt of the German REWE Group and their requirement for flowers and ornamentals certification. Read about their commitment here.

June will be a busy month for GLOBALG.A.P. Our Board aims to adopt the new Version 5 of the Integrated Farm Assurance Standard for Crops and Aquaculture, after our technical committees have completed reviewing all of the 1,500 comments received during the two public consultation periods.

Our TOUR Stop in the USA in Chicago on 11 June will feature top-level representatives from the FDA, Walmart, Costco, and Wegmans, the US Department of Agriculture, and the US Department of Labor. We hope to see you there. We will also be holding our USA Crops National Technical Working Group annual meeting and attending the United Fresh convention.

Next month, we will be speaking in Cologne, Germany, at the GRAPAS event about our new Crops for Processing Standard initiative. And in Saint Paul, Minneapolis, USA, at the IFAMA Global Conference we will be presenting the progress we have made as a member of the interim steering committee of the Declaration of Abu Dhabi.

And here’s a list of other developments in our global community:

Looking forward to seeing you at one of our TOUR 2015 stops!

Best regards,
Kristian Moeller
CEO, GLOBALG.A.P.
