MAY 2016 EDITION

Dear Colleague,

Greetings from Cologne.

I am pleased to announce that GLOBALG.A.P. has entered a new era with respect to consumer-side aquaculture certification: The launch of a consumer label for fish and seafood from certified aquaculture. The GGN Certified Aquaculture label combined with the online portal www.ggn.org connects consumers to farms and their stories. In addition to a GGN farm search, the online portal provides detailed information on the processes involved in aquaculture production.

The online portal www.ggn.org will also be made available to other aquaculture standards on a cooperation basis, in order to cover a large selection of certified species and collaborate with nationally and/or internationally established and trustworthy standards. A first cooperation was agreed before the official launch with the standard Friend of the Sea. We’re expecting the first products to carry the consumer label in June of this year. For more information, please read our press release and view the launch documentation from this year’s Seafood Expo Global in Brussels.

June is set to be yet another month of travel and activities on several continents. I will be participating at the Consumer Goods Forum on 15-17 June 2016 in Cape Town, South Africa, and at the IFAMA on 19-23 June 2016 in Aarhus, Denmark.

During the United Fresh Show, taking place on 20-22 June in Chicago, USA, our team will be discussing with the North American National Technical Working Group the possible changes and additions to the GLOBALG.A.P. Fruit and Vegetable Standard Version 5 in order to meet the US Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements for produce safety. This will have a significant impact on all producers selling to the United States, and we will keep you informed on further developments as they occur.

Other developments in the GLOBALG.A.P. Community:
  • Lidl Portugal Boosts Growth with GLOBALG.A.P. Certified Locally Sourced Fresh Produce
  • ATISA Becomes Peru’s First GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Certified Producer
One more reminder that our G.A.P. Awards 2016 application period ends on 30 June. This a valuable opportunity for GLOBALG.A.P. certified producers to gain industry recognition for their hard work and dedication. We kindly invite you to pass on the information to the GLOBALG.A.P. certified producers in your supply chain for a chance to win a trip to the GLOBALG.A.P. SUMMIT 2016 in Amsterdam. You can get more information at www.globalgap.org/gapawards.
