Greetings from Cologne.
Transparency – Responsibility – Accountability
These 3 core words are the strategy basis of purpose and value-driven
companies in today’s food business environment, as confirmed by a
number of CEOs at the world’s largest annual gathering of leaders in
the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, the Consumer Goods Forum
Summit, held this year in Cape Town, South Africa.
The next buzzword I heard in Cape Town was “Disruption". All
speakers – and half of them were CEOs – expressed excitement about the
challenge of implementing platform economies in our food sector. I
believe that our farm assurance and certification sector will look much
different in only a few years, given the technological change toward
virtually zero storage cost through cloud computing, and unseen new analytical power that utilizes big data scenarios.
The GLOBALG.A.P. Community can certainly learn more about anticipated changes in the industry at our GLOBALG.A.P. SUMMIT 2016 in Amsterdam on 27-28 September
After Prince Pieter-Christiaan van Oranje-Nassau opens the conference,
all our delegates will have an excellent opportunity to discuss the
Future of Farm Certification with our growing list of specialist
speakers and panelists. We already have a record number of first time speakers, all exciting
experts who are presenting their ideas and innovations at the SUMMIT
2016. Delegates can look forward to the likes of
Unilever’s Jan Kees Vis, keynote speaker in the plenary session “How to
Measure Improvement" on 28 September, at 1.30-2.30 pm. He raises the question: “The
proof of the pudding is in the eating. How do we measure improvement in
such a way that it is useful rather than burdensome for farmers, and
meaningful for consumers?

I also was pleased to read the positive rating GLOBALG.A.P. received in the recently published Standards and Blue Economy Report
as part of the Canadian State of Sustainability Initiatives Review. We
welcome such independent studies as they bring more transparency into
the complex and unique seafood supply chain.
