Pan African Stakeholders Join in the GLOBALGAP TOUR2009
Nairobi, 15 September 2009 -- More than 120 participants joined in the first stop on the GLOBALGAP TOUR2009. The TOUR2009 will visit 5 continents between now and November as part of its outreach and consultation to key stakeholders in the run up to its new version to be published in 2011. Leaders from the horticultural sector in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Senegal, Mozambique, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Egypt and South Africa participated in meetings on how to implement GLOBALGAP in their Nations.

Kenyan Agriculture Minister Hon.Gideion M.Ndambuki in his key note speech welcomed GLOBALGAP to Nairobi and congratulated them on its partnership with the Fresh Produce Exporters Association (FPEAK) in organising the event and for assisting the Horticultural Industry in meeting the food safety and sustainability requirements of its major export markets.The Minister highly appreciated the tools being developed by GLOBALGAP to aid compliance of small holders with the standards.
At the event Nigel Garbutt Chairman GLOBALGAP said "The topics under discussion were of vital importance to the horticultural Industry in meeting the future requirements of retailers, producers and consumers alike". Integrated Pest Management, the sustainable use of resources and microbiological safety of fresh produce were discussed in round table sessions where participants could directly comment on the new standard proposals. Results of table discussions will be uploaded for further comments to the GLOBALGAP online forum.
