On 26 October 2014, GLOBALG.A.P. is organizing a one-day student event at UAE University Campus (UAEU) in Al Ain.

The UAE University Students’ Day will give students an overview of third-party certification systems and the importance of implementing Good Agricultural Practices in particular in livestock, aquaculture, and fruit and vegetable production.

Private food safety standards and third-party certification are of growing importance in the agricultural sector, particularly in the UAE where sustainable agriculture is high on the agenda. For addressing the issues in sustainable agriculture, government authorities such as the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority and Farmer Service Center are trying to implement modern technologies and strategies, mainly in water conservation, in the agriculture sector. This is in line with the policy of the Government of Abu Dhabi, and in particular its Agenda 2030, which aims to achieve the environmentally sustainable development of the farming sector in order to guarantee food safety and food supply in the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE is trying to adopt sustainable agricultural practices throughout the farm sectors in the country. Due to urbanization and increasing population, the country’s mainstream agriculture needs lots of support in the form of modern technologies. Sustainable agriculture addresses many environmental and social concerns, but it also offers innovative and economically viable opportunities for growers, laborers, consumers, policymakers and many others in the entire food system of the country,” said Dr. Aisha Abushelaibi, Acting Dean of College of Food and Agriculture at UAEU.

“The industry needs more qualified leaders to address the challenge of global food security, and manage resilient food systems that respond efficiently to the food safety and sustainability demands,” said Kristian Moeller, GLOBALG.A.P. CEO. This collaboration with UAEU is a great opportunity to spark the interest of students looking to advance their professional prospects in the global food sector.”

Sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and organized with kind support of the College of Food and Agriculture of UAE University, the UAE University Students’ Day will open with a welcoming speech by Dr. Aisha Abushelaibi, and an opening speech by Dr. Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P., who will introduce GLOBALG.A.P. and outline current market demands.
