Promoting Good Agricultural Practices and Facilitating Trade in Central Asia with GIZ

The second stop on a a 2-stop TOUR event organized by our partner GIZ as part of their Trade Facilitation in Central Asia Program took place on 1-2 March 2018  in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The first stop took place in Tajikistan .

Agriculture in Kyrgyzstan is one of the leading sectors of the economy, covering 24 percent of the country's gross domestic product and 34 percent employment. As 65 percent of the population live in rural areas, agriculture bears not only economic, but also great social and political significance.

The Kyrgyzstan government plans to increase the country’s exports of fresh fruit and vegetables by 2020. To this aim, efforts are underway to explore various options for implementing international standards and Good Agricultural Practices in order to enable the country’s growers to compete with the leading suppliers of agricultural products on international markets.

Hosted at the Jannat Regency Hotel, the two-day event was attended by representatives from ministries, agencies, business associations, farmers, consulting companies, certification bodies, and international organizations

Dr. Kliment Petrov, Expert/Integrity Assessments & Training, GLOBALG.A.P., presented the benefits of implementing GLOBALG.A.P. Certification as a means of improving competitiveness and facilitating access of fruit and vegetable products to international markets. Together with GIZ representatives, he discussed the structure and benefits of the localg.a.p. program as a means of promoting Good Agricultural practices in the country.

On the second day, a roundtable discussion offered potential participants of Farm
