According to a company statement, Walmart Brazil “is committed to delivering safer products to its customers and to protect the environment. For that reason, Walmart Brazil has decided to accept GLOBALG.A.P. certified products as the requirement to supply fresh fruits and vegetables in Brazil".

“We are pleased to see another example in Latin America of the GLOBALG.A.P. IFA Standard being implemented for the national market and not only for export markets”, said Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P. “I applaud Walmart for driving food safety in the Brazilian produce industry.”

With headquarters based in Sao Paulo, Walmart Brazil began in 1995 with two supercenters and three Sam's Clubs. Over the past 15 years, the company has grown to become the third largest retailer in Brazil with a total of 558 retail units nationwide. Its brands include: BIG, Bompreço, Hiper Bompreço, Magazine, Maxxi, Mercadorama, Nacional, Sam’s Club, Supermercado Todo Dia, TodoDia, Walmart and Walmart Posto.

Walmart Brazil also leads several initiatives to promote social and corporate responsibility with a strong focus on empowering women in the workplace as well as environmental responsibility. With the signature of the Pacto pela Sustentabilidade (Sustainability Pact) in 2009 , Walmart's suppliers committed to incorporating socio-environmental responsibility aspects in their operations. Requiring GLOBALG.A.P. Certification from its Fruit & Vegetable Suppliers is in line with its ongoing strategy to spread Good Agricultural Practices among growers in Brazil and ensure safe food for its customers.
