Profile

Citromax S.A.C.I. has been one of the world’s premier growers of lemons and producers of oils, juices and by-products for more than 50 years. It is in Tucuman, Argentina, known as the world’s premier lemon producing region both in terms of volume and quality, that Citromax S.A.C.I. installed its first agro-industrial complex in 1964 as well as the first plantations in the province. Today, Citromax cultivates about 4,000 hectares (12,000 acres) of land, continually monitoring all phases of development, from planting to harvesting, utilizing state-of-the-art technological innovations to ensure the quality satisfaction of our most demanding customers. We also process 170,000 tons of fruit per year in our ultra-modern industrial plant, producing various lemon by-products such as essential oil, cloudy and clarified concentrated juices and dehydrated peel. This direct-from-the-source vertical integration and ownership of the entire process sets Citromax apart.

At Citromax, we work around the clock to offer products that meet consumers’ growing and changing needs. Because we own and oversee the entire process—from seedling to sip—we can claim unsurpassed quality assurance from grove management and traceability to supply integrity to flavor creation. We have instituted stringent controls both in our orchards and in the packinghouse to assure that our products meet the strict industry standards for the contents of allowable pesticides. Our packinghouse uses advanced computerized optical systems for electronic sorting of fruit to meet the requirements of every market. This, along with the cold-storage facilities and de-greening rooms used for fruit preservation and shipping, completes our circle of controls.

Achievements

Social Responsibility: Citromax is always aware of its responsibility as a global corporation and is committed to Corporate Social Responsibility, working with various local social and environmental institutions to encourage socially responsible practices. Our dedication to our orchards and the environment– from planting and harvesting to our end products of fruit, juices, oils and by-products–sets Citromax apart and has enabled us to pass our largest clients’ audits with flying colors. We have GLOBALG.A.P. (then EurepGAP) certification since 2002, and we are also certified Organic production in Orchards, packing house and industry (NOP, JAS, SUE, IFOAM); HACCP, ISO 9001 and BRC in Packing House; ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and HACCP in industry Plant; and Women’s Business Enterprise.

Organic: Citromax S.A.C.I.’s processing plant in Tucuman, Argentina was certified as an approved Organic Processing Facility in 2004. It is the largest organic lemon grower and processor in the world. We now also grow organic blueberries and we are committed to continuing to expand our organic offerings.

Pesticides: We have instituted stringent controls both in our orchards and brand new packinghouses to assure that our products meet strict industry standards for allowable pesticides.

Environmental Sustainability: Committed to the environmental sustainability of our operations, we emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water. We have reduced the water utilization of our factory by more than 5 percent in order to prevent excessive exploitation of local water sources. And we built our own water treatment facilities based on the ecological goal of preventing contamination of our local environment, safely treating all of our effluents.

Social Sustainability: In the year 2006, Citromax developed a new project, blueberry production, in order to hold the inactive workers at the end of citrus harvesting season, preventing migrations to others Argentine cities looking for work, and trying to avoid social consequences of family uprooting. By 2012, all workers employed in the citrus harvest season (about 2,000 workers), continue to work in blueberries harvest, making continued employment and improving quality of life. With this new project, Citromax promoted involvement of women in all productive processes, and today we have about 700 women employed.

“With our commitment to transparent business practices, ethical behavior and a high level of customer service, Citromax’s social responsibility extends not only to the planet but to the people on it.”
