Country Peru

Profile:

Agricola Pampa Baja S.A.C. (APB) farms 1288 hectares set in the district of Majes, which is part of the region of Arequipa in the south of Peru, some 900 km south of the city of Lima. Located at 1000 meters above sea level, it’s a deserted area characterized by its clay loam and temperate climate. The farm uses water from rainfall collected in the Condoroma dam at 4158 meters above sea level (280 million m3 of water) and from the Siguas River. All the water is distributed via tunnels and irrigation channels.

APB began its operations in 1999 with the production of forage and paprika peppers, which soon became the company’s main product. APB’s main focus is on export agriculture. The company also operates one of the largest dairy farms in the country, which greatly complements its agricultural activities. APB’s farmlands are fully enabled, equipped with an irrigation infrastructure of very high quality, which is professionally managed using top-of-the-line technology at all stages.

Agricola Pampa Baja S.A.C. produces and exports a great variety of vegetables such as onions, artichoke and peppers, as well as fruit such as grapes, avocados, citrus and pomegranates. Due to the great climate conditions APB can produce all year round. APB also has two packing facilities. One is for fresh fruit, with the capacity to pack up to 8000 cartons of 8.2 kg each per day and process up to 40 metric tons of avocados a day. The second packinghouse is for processing peppers and vegetables with a capacity of 2-5 metric tons per hour.

The farm has generated around 1400 jobs in the region, which can reach up to 2000 in peak season. It also provides indirect work to around 550 people.

APB complies with the GLOBALG.A.P. Standards in line with three pillars: social responsibility, product safety, and environmental sustainability.

“Our aim is to share our experience with local farmers with the goal of spreading the benefits of GLOBALG.A.P. Certification in the region.”

Achievements:

Agricola Pampa Baja S.A.C. has had GLOBALG.A.P. Certification since 2005. In only a few years the company has become one of the most recognized Peruvian agro-exporters, being the only Peruvian paprika producer with GLOBALG.A.P. Certification.

APB decided to obtain GLOBALG.A.P. Certification (then EUREPGAP) when its farmlands and production increased, and it became necessary to develop an adequate risk management for contamination. As a result APB saw the need to monitor the diverse activities of all the stages of production in order to ensure that the quality control and food safety of the paprika pepper is maintained. Today APB is certified for avocadoes, capsicums, grapes, mandarins and pomegranates.
