Recognized Feed Safety Schemes

The GLOBALG.A.P. IFA Version 5 Standards for Livestock and Aquaculture set requirements concerning the certification of purchased compound feed utilized by the producers. The requirements are defined in IFA Version 5., LB 4.1.2 (Livestock Base) and AB 7.1.2 (Aquaculture Base).

The actual compound feed production location where the feed is sourced from must be certified against:

  1. The GLOBALG.A.P. CFM Standard, or
  2. A standard that has been successfully benchmarked against the GLOBALG.A.P. CFM Standard, or
  3. An ISO/IEC 17065 or ISO/IEC 17021 accredited feed scheme

Based on point 3 above, the following schemes are considered as sufficient to comply with the requirements:

  1. GMP+ B1, Production, Trade and Services 
  2. FSSC Feed (including PAS 222)
  3. SQF Code for Feed 7th edition, Level 2

These schemes are not considered as being officially equivalent or benchmarked to the GLOBALG.A.P. CFM Standard.

Please note that, in addition to being certified against one of the above-mentioned feed safety schemes, feed manufacturers must provide a letter/declaration to their customers (primary producers of aquaculture and/or livestock) that states compliance against section 15 (15.1-15.5) of the GLOBALG.A.P. Compound Feed Manufacturing Standard, which is titled RESPONSIBLE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES. This letter must be available for inspection at livestock and/or the aquaculture farms at the time of first and subsequent audits.

Interested accredited feed safety schemes may apply at standard@globalgap.org to be included to this above list.

The applicant feed safety scheme must submit to the GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat a cross-reference checklist quoting the relevant control points of their standard against the subsequent items.

The comparison and endorsement of the applicant is based on and must include the following criteria as a minimum:

  1. Approval by the national authorities of the feed mills to operate for production of compound feed and/or medicated feed.
  2. QMS and HACCP compliance with the GLOBALG.A.P. CFM Standard requirements as outlined in CPCCs 3.1 (QMS) and 3.2 (HACCP).
  3. Documented risk assessment of the suppliers of feed ingredients.
  4. Feed ingredients management on the production site during and at off-site stores regarding storage, processing and handling of finished feed based on Codex Alimentarius requirements.
  5. Site hygiene and pest control of the manufacturer.
  6. Good Manufacturing Practices regarding the following processing procedures:
    • Storage of feed ingredients and procedures to avoid commingling
    • Documented and regular calibration of the production equipment
    • Traceability of feed ingredients and finished feed
    • Quality control of finished feed
    • Proper labelling of finished products
    • Transport conditions of raw materials and finished feed
    • Testing and sampling system for the monitoring of undesired substances in feed ingredients and finished products
    • Compliance with the GLOBALG.A.P. CFM Standard Guidelines 1, 2 and 3
    • Internal auditing
