Frequently Asked Questions

Harmonized Produce Safety Standard (HPSS)

Which United States Retailers accept this Standard?

While a grower should check each year with their retailer to obtain a current list of acceptable food safety standards, as of July 2017, the following retailers recognize the GLOBALG.A.P. HPSS:

  1. Costco
  2. Walmart
How is the GLOBALG.A.P. HPSS different from the GLOBALG.A.P. IFA Fruit and Vegetables Standard?

The GLOBALG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) Standard is accepted by many global retailers, and includes control points addressing worker protection and sustainability. The focus of the HPSS is on core food safety control points and the practical implementation of good agricultural practices. Producers seeking to export products outside of the United States and those looking for solutions that include assurance of worker protection and sustainability efforts would be best served with the GLOBALG.A.P. IFA Standard.

Is HPSS the same as the United Fresh Harmonized Standard that is audited by USDA representatives?

In order to obtain Global Food Safety Initiative Benchmarking (GFSI), a set of additional control points were added to the core standard that was developed and approved by the United Fresh calibration committee. These additional questions/control points are included in the GLOBALG.A.P. Harmonized Produce Safety Standard, but do not occur in the basic USDA Harmonized GAP Standard. GLOBALG.A.P. is the only farm assurance company that offers a GFSI benchmarked version of the harmonized standard.
