Christi Venter - Standards & Technical GLOBALG.A.P. Expert
21 April 2017
Christi is part of GLOBALG.A.P.’s Standards and Technical Team and is based in Pretoria, South Africa. She has more than 17 years of experience in food safety, auditing systems and Good Agricultural Practices. She has a Master’s Degree (MSc) in Plant Pathology from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
Christi started her professional career at the Agricultural Research Council – Plant Protection Research Institute in South Africa working as a Technical Research Assistant in the laboratory for Fungal Plant Diseases. She was introduced to GLOBALG.A.P. when she was the Technical Liaison Manager at a processing company exporting fresh fruit salads to Europe, where she was responsible for establishing Good Agricultural Practices at farm level.
Christi started her auditing career at a locally based Inspection Body, QC Fresh. She later joined CMI (now NSF) as a Senior Food Safety Auditor conducting audits such as BRC, HACCP, GLOBALG.A.P. and retail-specific audits. She then joined Food Safety Assessment (FSA) (now Intertek-South Africa) as a Lead Auditor for Food Safety Management Systems, Food Safety and Regulatory Requirements (SAATCA registered) in various sectors such as fresh produce, RTE products, confectionary, milling, etc.
Christi joined GLOBALG.A.P. part-time in 2007 and full-time in 2013. She is currently actively assisting the development and implementation of systems for new projects, specifically the localg.a.p. program, and manages the GLOBALG.A.P. product list. She also acts as a trainer for Farm Assurers and inspectors/auditors on the GLOBALG.A.P. System and offers support for technical matters such as benchmarking and national interpretation guideline reviews, training material review and development. As she is based in Africa, her focus naturally lies on the African markets, which can be challenging at times, but are very important in terms of sustainability and food security. However, her responsibilities do in fact span the entire globe.
On a more personal note, Christi is married and has a 10-year-old daughter. Christi also loves the outdoors, and her ideal holiday is to go camping in the African Bushveld, surrounded by nature, family and friends. Travelling, exploring new things and wildlife photography are some of her passions. Helping the less fortunate and people in need is also close to her heart, and therefore she always tries to find some extra time to get involved with various charity and upliftment projects in her local community.
