GLOBALG.A.P. is proud to be recognized as Best Practice Standard for Tokyo 2020 as the Olympic and Paralympic Games are one of the world’s largest sports events and their influence will extend across Japan and the world.

The Tokyo 2020 High-level Sustainability Plan describes how to deliver sustainable Tokyo 2020 Games and serves as a basis for those involved in the Games. Sustainable Games operations will spread the concept and ideas of “ sustainability” not only in Tokyo but encourage people to act responsibly around the world.

Placing great emphasis on environment matters, the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee developed a sustainable sourcing code for products and services deemed vital to the successful delivery of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The Organizing Committee accepts agricultural and livestock products certified under the JGAP or GLOBALG.A.P. scheme. They meet the conditions set in the Sustainable Sourcing Code for Agricultural and Livestock Products. Both sourcing codes ensure that products procured follow high food safety standards. They also are in line with Japanese food safety laws and regulations. Conditions also specify that measures must be in place to ensure the safety of workers.

Furthermore, agricultural products must “ensure a harmonious balance between the agricultural production activity and the surrounding environment and ecosystem”. The Sustainable Sourcing Code for Livestock Products stipulates that livestock production activities must be performed in an eco-friendly manner. Livestock animals must be raised in a “ comfortable environment with reference to the Animal Welfare-oriented Livestock Management Standards”.

All GLOBALG.A.P. Standards and Add-ons incorporate strict criteria. They ensure food safety, sustainability, responsible water management, pollution control, energy efficiency, workers’ health and safety, animal welfare, and environmental responsibility on the farm. These criteria are also in line with seven of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The GLOBALG.A.P. Chain of Custody Standard ensures that any product bearing a GLOBALG.A.P. label or being sold as a GLOBALG.A.P. certified product is sourced from GLOBALG.A.P. certified farms. GLOBALG.A.P. Bookmarking is a traceability tool for buyers and retailers. It helps them to source GLOBALG.A.P. certified products and makes it easy to record and track the certificate status of the buyer’s products.

The organizing Committee has appointed a research partner that will study, analyze and record the changes caused by the delivery of the Tokyo 2020 Games for a period of 12 years from the bid stage to three years after the completion of the Games. The results of their impact on environmental, sociocultural and economic areas are an important source of reference for the organizing Committee and for future editions of the Games.

GLOBALG.A.P. feels honored being a part of it.
