New Focus Group on TR4 Biosecurity

Background:

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense – tropical race 4 (TR4), which is also referred to as “Foc 4” or “Panama disease”, is the most imminent threat to the banana industry and for those who depend upon banana production and consumption for their livelihoods. Currently, there is no known effective treatment to control the disease for Cavendish cultivars. Therefore, preventive measures are the only viable option.

The GLOBALG.A.P. objective is to assure the implementation of good agricultural practices worldwide. In this context, the GLOBALG.A.P. Board approved the development of an Add-On during the meeting held in Amsterdam on 26 September 2016.  The TR4 Add-On should be a tool to prevent the spreading of the disease within/from GLOBALG.A.P. certified farms, and most importantly, it should help raise awareness about the seriousness of the disease on a global scale. Thus, the Add-On should address this biosecurity issue and provide further support for the entire banana sector. This is “one more tool in the tool box” and GLOBALG.A.P. is open for further partnership and participation in collective efforts.
