Plant Propagation Material (PPM) refers to a variety of sources: seeds, cuttings, bulbs and other plant parts that are required for growing all kinds of plants. Many producers of fruit and vegetables and/or flowers and ornamentals also grow and sell propagation material for the same scopes. GLOBALG.A.P. has therefore incorporated PPM as a sub-scope into the new IFA Version 5. The GLOBALG.A.P. Best Practices for nurseries cover:

  •     Food Defence
  •     Traceability
  •     Sustainability: Water Management
  •     Integrated Pest Management

The idea behind this relatively new standard is that certified producers, who buy the material from a certified nursery, further reduce risks by implementing best practices right at the seed or plantling. For example, they will comply easily with the two new crop-based control points that ensure produce traceability and compliance with intellectual property (IP) laws, coming into effect with the newly released standard version. The audit process is also facilitated to a large extent by the incorporation of the certified PPM into the supply chain.

Semilleros Saliplant, a Spain-based grafting and budding nursery, has always been at the forefront of the sector, which is why it was one of the first producers to get its PPM GLOBALG.A.P. certified. Founded in 1986, the company operates 8 centres located between Granada and Malaga, with a combined total area of 15 hectares. The nursery produces around 120 million plants annually that it distributes throughout Spain and Europe, and grafts more than 60 percent of the plants to produce tomatoes, watermelons and cucumbers.

“All in all, the results have been very positive in the last years. Along with implementing the standard, we have also refined our internal processes. We have increasingly gained trust among our clients, and we are received as a producer with above-average professionalism. In a period of extreme competition, where not everybody plays by the same rules, the only way to defend our market position is by looking for excellence and unified standards such as provided through GLOBALG.A.P. certification”, says Domingo López-A., Manager of Semillero Saliplant.
