Nigel Garbutt, who has served as Chairman of the Board for the past 12 years, has stepped down from his post and will not be seeking another term.

Nigel left the UK retailer Safeway to join GLOBALG.A.P.’s predecessor, EUREPGAP, in 1997 and became Chairman of the Board in 2001. Since then, the organization has grown to become a global leader in farm assurance and a highly respected brand in the industry.

From Nigel Garbutt:

"My term as Chairman of GLOBALG.A.P. has come to an end and I feel it is now an opportune moment to hand the reigns over to new leadership to take the organisation into its next phase of development. It has been an immense honour to serve the industry in this role and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the very many friends and colleagues I have met and worked with from around the world for their support and commitment to the ideals behind GLOBALG.A.P.”

On behalf of everyone at GLOBALG.A.P., Jim Jefcoate, Group Technical Director at IPL and a current GLOBALG.A.P. Board member, said:

“The GLOBALG.A.P. Board and Executive are extremely grateful to Nigel for his dedication and commitment in developing the standard over the last 12 years. He has been instrumental in creating an industry-leading tool that has given consumers and retailers the confidence that agricultural practices in their supply chains deliver a safe product and a sustainable environment. Furthermore, it has provided farmers in developed and developing countries with a one-stop shop that gives them the necessary recognition to access all global markets. Nigel can be justifiably proud of the central role he has played in this unique achievement. We wish Nigel well in all of his future enterprises and recognize that he will be a hard act to follow.

GLOBALG.A.P. members are currently in the process of electing the new Board for the next four-year term. The Board election will run through March and April of this year.

The GLOBALG.A.P. Board is made up of an equal number of seats for retailers and producers, who are all elected by GLOBALG.A.P. members. Retail/food service members elect their Board representatives and producer/supplier members elect their Board representatives. This membership-driven democratic governance process is the foundation of GLOBALG.A.P.’s partnership principle.

The newly elected Board will appoint a new Chairperson at their first meeting in early June 2013.
