By securing a deal to supply METRO Cash & Carry across France and introducing GLOBALG.A.P. certified cobia across all 93 locations of the wholesale giant, Panama-based Open Blue Sea Farms is expecting a strong presence and growth in Europe by 2017.

Panama-based Open Blue Sea Farms, the single largest supplier of fresh cobia to the USA and the largest deep-water open-ocean farm in the world, achieved GLOBALG.A.P. Certification in early 2015. Cobia produced in open ocean submerged cage systems was added to the list of GLOBALG.A.P. certifiable species and systems in 2014.

According to Bernie Leger, Executive Vice-President at Open Blue, the deal with wholesaler Metro Cash & Carry "represents a strategic opportunity" to promote cobia in the EU.

Part of METRO GROUP, one of the largest global distributors, METRO Cash & Carry is the global leader in international wholesale trade with over 750 locations across 28 countries in Europe and Asia. With about one million customers in France, Metro Cash & Carry represents 60% of the fresh wholesale supply in the country, which will lay the groundwork to increase cobia presence not only in France, but also throughout Europe.

"Our strategy is to establish a channel in the market through distributors or wholesalers that have a strong position in the market. METRO has a very strong position in the French market, but also in Italy, Belgium, Germany and many European countries," Leger said.

Besides Europe, Open Blue is targeting Asian and South American markets, as sales in the USA have seen the largest development since they have begun operating out of the producer’s new processing plant and Panama hatchery facilities.
