The GLOBALG.A.P. Good Agricultural Practice Awards 2012

This year GLOBALG.A.P. initiated the first-ever G.A.P. Awards to honor GLOBALG.A.P. certified producers who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to implementing Good Agricultural Practice. The awards were presented at this year’s GLOBALG.A.P. SUMMIT 2012 in Madrid.

The G.A.P. Awards are designed to give producers an opportunity to show the impact G.A.P. implementation has made on their production, workers and environment. We asked producers to share with us their successful achievements, which ranged from overcoming specific obstacles to get GLOBALG.A.P. Certification to being the driving force behind the formation of a new National Technical Working Group.

The stories and photographs of this year’s G.A.P. Awards applicants were showcased at the SUMMIT 2012 in Madrid, each presented on a poster for all the conference participants and delegates to see. All of this year’s applicants demonstrated a very high standard and commitment to GLOBALG.A.P. Certification. It was particularly gratifying to see how all of these GLOBALG.A.P.-certified producers evolved into longtime loyal partners, choosing to implement GLOBALG.A.P. principles on their farms and production facilities over many years. Their continued pledge to adopt Good Agricultural Practice proves our worth as more than just a certification scheme.

The level of quality, diversity and commitment made it exceptionally difficult to select an overall winner. And so by establishing selection criteria, GLOBALG.A.P. finally chose 4 winners from the 20 applicants, and, in so doing, acknowledged its worldwide producers and in particular how GLOBALG.A.P. is being adapted locally.

The G.A.P. Awards winners all show a high degree of innovation in agricultural sustainability in several of these areas: GLOBALG.A.P. standards use, the integration of the standard into their business models, consumer linkage and understanding, and a high degree of responsible use and consideration of resources, including workers and the environment.

The G.A.P. Awards 2012 winners are:

From Belgium: VBT Responsibly Fresh
From Japan: Farm Alliance Matsumoto Farm Co. Ltd
From Kenya: Kakuzi Limited
From Uruguay: MILAGRO S.A.
