Lodovico Etzi Azienda Agricola - Two Sardinian brothers who went from admiring auditors to being admired by auditors

The brothers Fulvio and Lodovico Etzi manage two farms on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. Both are GLOBALG.A.P. certified for Option 1 and GRASP for artichokes of different varieties. The two have been in the business for over 40 years and have greatly profited from GLOBALG.A.P. certification, which has helped them to improve the quality of their products and thus to achieve better results in the market.

“When we started our business, we were a small operation that was trying to get a foothold in the business. However, today our operation is distinguished as one that produces good results but has only a small impact on the environment. Our artichokes are widely renowned for being genuine, safe, and sound,” says Lodovico Etzi. Thanks to their ongoing efforts, the Etzi brothers and their team have thus also managed to achieve a number of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, including “the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.”

All procedures and processes are today clear and known to clients, providers, personnel, and institutions. “We started with GLOBALG.A.P. in 2010 and really admired the accuracy and correctness required by the auditors. It was initially a little difficult for us to adhere to all the rules and regulations, but we persevered and have always been successful at every annual audit since. In fact, today we are even admired by the auditors who have congratulated us on our precision and full conformance with the standard,” explains Fulvio Etzi proudly.

“Actually, we have always shrunk from certain practices, which involve the excessive use of pesticides, growth hormones and other odd methods to say the least. Nevertheless, we realized that it was not enough to differentiate our farms and products. We needed to step up to the next level in order to get better quality and keep the environment safe,” the brothers maintain. “To respect natural resources should be the first goal of every farmer. The earth provides for our every need,” Lodovico points out. “With environmental hazards like water pollution, soil erosion, and climate change, we have to take a collective stand to reverse human-made damage before it’s too late. That’s why we suggest other farmers also start with GLOBALG.A.P. Besides, it’s an excellent tool for streamlining your business!” Fulvio states.

They seem to have found the right balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability, and are particularly thankful to all the people involved in this accomplishment. “ Our artichokes have always been appreciated by consumers from various regions in Italy; however, they are now being retailed and appreciated by more people in Europe. Undoubtedly, GLOBALG.A.P. adds value to your produce and helps you widen your market. Therefore, we definitely recognize that this great achievement would not have been possible without all the people involved in this process. We are grateful to CCPB srl, the Certification Body, which we consider a precious partner. Their scrupulous and attentive audits have been of great help and confirmed the good work we have done during these years. We also want to express our gratitude to Robert Mazzei, advisor for quality and business compliance, who first guided us through the certification process, and Francesco Piras, agronomist, who cares for all agronomic procedures, as well as Damiano Aresu, our former agronomist and internal auditor during the 2010-2013 period. And of course, we also feel sincerely grateful to our personnel. Not only do they contribute to improve our product’s quality and business results, but they are also a great support in adhering to all the requirements for the GLOBALG.A.P. Standard. Last but not least, our appreciation goes to our clients and all of the consumers whose support and loyalty represent the most invaluable reward for our efforts,” the Etzi brothers unanimously confirm.
