JULY 2016 EDITION
Dear Colleague,
Is Certification a Failure of Governments?
Some people believe that the growth of certification is due only to the
inability of governments and societies to regulate trade requirements.
If the public sector would become more effective, there would be no
need for certification.
I strongly disagree with this statement. However, I do believe that
both the public as well as the private sector need to find new ways of
working together. But what are good examples of that future model of
co-regulation? Let's ask those government bodies that are on the
forefront of the debate: FDA, EU Commission and the Dutch Government,
all together on one stage at our SUMMIT 2016, on 27-28 Sept. in Amsterdam.
Make sure you register today and join the representatives of already 129 companies and organizations from 39 countries.
Do you already want to become active beforehand? Then follow the discussions in our LinkedIn group and on Twitter at #ggsummit2016.
One other major SUMMIT topic – big data in agriculture – was already
discussed with scientists of agribusiness schools at the IFAMA Global
Conference in Aarhus, Denmark, last month. We can only begin to imagine
what impact new digital technologies will have on the future of farm
certification. Are you ready to embrace that future?
I see immediate cost saving opportunities for farmers, in particular
with those certification standards that require less frequent on-farm
visits by auditors, like the proposed GLOBALG.A.P. Crops for Processing
Standard. Have you checked out the opportunity for adding your
comments? Please observe the public consultation period, which ends 7
August 2016.
Please note that you have several opportunities for discussions with
our team even before our SUMMIT in Amsterdam. These include not only
last month’s successful TOUR Stops 2016 in Mexico and Ecuador, but also the upcoming Vietfish, and the Fresh Produce Safety Conference,
where you can meet our new colleague in Australia: Belinda Millard. She
has been working for over 20 years with fast moving consumer goods
companies, and most recently had the role of Supplier Approval Manager
at Woolworths Limited, Australia’s largest retailer, where she worked
in a corporate function to deliver strategic compliance and ethical
sourcing policy and audit programmes for the business. As part of this
role she was able to focus on working together with a number of
industry and regulatory groups on innovative initiatives.
