GLOBALG.A.P. Emergency Procedure for Certificate Extension Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic

The Coronavirus pandemic has changed everything we know, and nothing is untouched. We all have to adjust on a daily basis as new information is released. We at GLOBALG.A.P. also had to re-evaluate our emergency procedure for certificate extension. We have decided to adapt our policy, like other certification program owners, to be aligned and to ensure transparency in the food supply chain and support those producers that need to show compliance with a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized standard.  Learn about the details on our website.

How Can Producers Address COVID-19?

In the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, farms around the globe continue to supply a hungry world. However, farmers and farm workers must now do so with additional concerns of potential illness that could disrupt their families, their communities, and their ability to produce.

Although there is no evidence that food or food packaging transmit the coronavirus according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) , there are still concerns about safe production and handling of produce at farm level to protect both the product and those who plant, tend, harvest, and pack it.

Many producers are wondering what they can and should do. There are many sources explaining the symptoms and basic prevention measures such as hand washing. Local, regional, and national governments are identifying testing options and measures to take in the case of suspected or confirmed infections.  We have prepared this resource on how producers can address COVID-19.

Consultation for Remote Inspections and Audits During COVID-19 Crisis

GLOBALG.A.P. is continuing to monitor and assess risks and recommendations in the face of the outbreak and rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Recent global developments have led to significant health and safety concerns, as well as to travel/movement restrictions in numerous countries and territories. To support its producers in this extraordinary situation, to safeguard the health and safety of inspectors and auditors, and to ensure a continuous supply of products from GLOBALG.A.P. certified production processes, GLOBALG.A.P. is considering alternative ways of conducting inspections and audits, including remote inspections and audits.  Read more on our website if you are interested in providing your feedback.

Launch of the Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) Standard Version 5.3-GFS

In order for GLOBALG.A.P. to maintain recognition of its Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard against the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) version 7.2 benchmarking requirements for the sub-scope Fruit and Vegetables and the scope Aquaculture and to gain recognition for the Hop sub-scope, an updated version of IFA has been published on 21 February 2020. This version, referred to as IFA V5.3-GFS, becomes obligatory on 21 May 2020 for those users supplying customers who demand compliance with a GFSI-recognized standard.  Find more information, including an FAQ, on our website.

North Bay Produce

Interview with Jennifer Pulcipher – Director of Food Safety & Compliance

Why is GLOBALG.A.P. important to you?
GLOBAL.G.A.P. is important to me because it has always been the flagship of third party Good Agricultural Practices and the gold standard of food safety certifications for growers around the world to achieve. Many North Bay Produce suppliers participate in the standard and therefore being involved with GLOBALG.A.P. is important to me so that I can represent our company’s suppliers and industry partners and be a voice on their behalf.

HeavyConnect

Interview with Abby Sherburne, Chief of Staff

Why is it important for you to be GLOBALG.A.P. members and how can your product help farmers?

HeavyConnect develops easy-to-use mobile software to digitize and simplify field operations. Our technology provides compliance documentation and record keeping for the agricultural industry. We built HeavyConnect to level the playing field for growers of all sizes - empowering them to simplify their operations and worklife. GLOBALG.A.P. enables our growers to showcase that work through the audit process. Like GLOBALG.A.P., we want to simplify the process of compliance documentation across the food chain, so we’ve partnered with GLOBALG.A.P. to digitize that process, allowing growers to reduce paper, address corrective actions in real time, and make it home for more dinners with family. Our software is easy to implement and use. This lowers the barrier to entry and allows all growers and packers (no matter their company culture or size) to implement digital food safety tracking. Additionally, our customer success team provides new customers with clear trainings and proactive support to make sure that deployments across an organization happen quickly.

FSMA PSR Add-on Updates

We have several updates related to the FSMA PSR add-on that we wanted to share:

1. A new FAQ about the add-on has been published to our website.

2. Mid-cycle checklist:
Understanding that business happens in between certification cycles, we are making it easier for producers and CBs to add the FSMA PSR add-on to their suite of certifications. With the help of the USA NTWG, the new FSMA PSR mid-cycle checklist is a tool to achieve the certificate of conformance after the initial or re-certification audit and without waiting until the next annual audit. The IFA standard is already included in this checklist, shortened to only include those control points and compliance criteria (CPCC) that are requirements of the Produce Safety Rule. This will save time for CBs to check only relevant CPCCs, and provides an opportunity for producers to receive the certificate of conformance for the FSMA PSR add-on earlier. Look for the checklist on the right-hand side of the FSMA PSR add-on page under "FSMA PSR Add-on Documents".

3. The Spanish translation of the v1.2 FSMA PSR add-on documents is now available on the Spanish webpage for the add-on.

We want to hear from you!

Please take a moment to complete these two surveys for us:

Trainings Interest Survey

What kinds of trainings do you want to see this year?
As we think about how we can best meet training needs for our stakeholders, we would love some feedback on what kinds of trainings you would like to see this year. Please fill out this brief survey and let us know what you’d be interested in learning more about.

Survey about USA and Canada Crops for Export

In order to help GLOBALG.A.P. North America better serve the needs of our stakeholders, we invite producers/shippers to complete this short survey about the experience of exporting crops. Producers certified by/seeking certification to GLOBALG.A.P. standards:

•    Survey is 10 questions and should take less than 10 minutes.
•    If your products are ONLY sold in the USA, you do not need to complete this survey.
•    If your products are sold directly (by you) or indirectly (by someone else) abroad, we would appreciate your response.
•    Only one response per company is needed. Why are we asking for this? We are seeking to better understand the needs and requirements of foreign buyers so that we can better tailor our certification options to your industry. For example, some international buyers may be fine with our
Harmonized Produce Safety Standard (HPSS), while others will require the Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard, and others may not require a GFSI benchmarked standard at all. Knowing what buyers are demanding can help us offer you certification options that are most appropriate in terms of time, cost and operational investments.
