With the aim of furthering their good practices and attaining even higher standards of quality, the Wong and Metro supermarkets have decided to become members of GLOBALG.A.P. They are the first supermarket chain in Latin America to achieve this. In doing so, they will continue combining their efforts with the aim of providing their customers with products which satisfy good agricultural, environmental, and social practices and are certified in accordance with an internationally recognized standard.

26 suppliers have already been certified

For the Supermarkets division of Cencosud Peru, it is a long-term plan which is now getting under way with the gradual certification of the suppliers who produce and market fruit and vegetables. 26 suppliers of imported peaches, apples, pears, and oranges as well as strawberries, blueberries, grapes, mangoes, and organic products available to customers in all Wong and Metro stores have already been certified.

“We hope that with GLOBALG.A.P.’s support we will be able to bolster our value chain, with our suppliers guaranteeing ever greater compliance with the strict social, environmental, and economic standards which will ensure the stability of the business in the long term”, said Mario Campodónico, CEO of the Supermarkets division at Cencosud Peru.

Promoting sustainable production

In turn, Angelo Lazo, Technical Key Account Manager for Peru at GLOBALG.A.P. pointed out that “the supermarkets and distributors who are members of GLOBALG.A.P. are committed not only to safeguarding the health of their customers but also to promoting sustainable production in the agriculture, livestock, and aquaculture sector the world over. We would like to congratulate Cencosud Peru on becoming the first supermarket in Latin America to join the ranks of our organization in order to promote and support our global initiative in Peru.”

For the Supermarkets division of Cencosud Peru, the bond it is forging with GLOBALG.A.P. represents a new milestone in the sustainable business model that it is constantly implementing. By becoming an active part of a network of more than 200,000 certified producers in 135 countries, Cencosud is not only seeking to nurture trust and integrity, but also aiming to foster the innovation and excellence of producers and marketers.
