The company traces its origin back to the California Packing Corporation (now Del Monte Foods), which started its operation in the Philippines in 1926 under Philippine Packing Corporation (PHILPACK).

With a 20,000-hectare pineapple plantation in Philippines and 700,000-ton processing capacity, PHILPACK operates the world’s largest fully-integrated pineapple operation. The company is proud of its long heritage of 90 years of pineapple growing and processing.

Today, we take pride to say that we are not only the world’s largest plantation but also the world’s lowest-cost producer and canner of quality and safe pineapple. This is the result of teamwork and joined efforts of all the workers harmonized and engaged by the following:

  • Growing Quality and Food Safety. We are committed in providing food products that meet the highest global standard in quality and food safety. Our GLOBALGAP certification in 2013 and Philippine GAP certification in 2010 are testament of this commitment. Our plantation is also certified to ISO 9001 while the cannery is certified to FSSC, BRC Global Standard on Food, ISO 9001, GMP, HACCP, Halal, Kosher and SGF. The company is now working for the certification of plantation and cannery to Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) this year.
  • Employee Benefits. Our workforce enjoys one of the most attractive compensation and benefit packages granted to agro-industrial workers in the Philippines. Plantation regular workers live with their families in company-provided houses with free electricity and 24-hour running supply of potable water. Our 4 major housing camps are complete with social hall, chapel, playground and plaza, day care center, primary and secondary schools and camp clinics. The company also provides free transportation for school children resulting in a zero drop-out rate in the local schools. We also own a 100-bed hospital managed by a medical service provider. Workers undergo annual medical checkup to same hospital.
  • Labor and Management Cooperation. Labor union and management councils meet regularly to discuss and decide issues affecting employees, the company and the community. We take pride to have enjoyed a sustained period of industrial peace, with no notices of strikes and lock-outs for over 40 years. This fruitful collaboration of labor and management has made us National Champion in the Search for Outstanding Labor-Management Cooperation for Industrial Peace in 2007.
  • Innovation as our Way of Life. PHILPACK continues to innovate in response to the global challenge for better food. Annually, employees present their process breakthroughs in work through Innovations Congress and Quality Circle forums. Some of the innovations already implemented are as follows: use of GPS in the fleet management system of boom spray equipment, use of SAS Analytics during forecasting, predictive modeling tasks and GIS-based sampling design, use of remote sensing for aerial survey, topographic mapping and spatial crop health analysis through vegetation indices, use of GIS during final map digitization, fabrication of glue scoop applicator use in box forming, improvement of dry fertilizer dispenser, amongst others.


Economic Sustainability
Since PHILPACK’s inception, the company took on the role of economic catalyst when it became instrumental in the establishment of the country’s pineapple industry. Today, pineapple is one of the Philippines' top 5 agricultural exports.

The economic impact of PHILPACK in Southern Philippines benefits more than 2,000 regular employees. In addition, we have engaged over 8,000 service providers in all areas of our operation. Our pineapple plantation encompasses 10 municipalities in Bukidnon and 7 towns in Misamis Oriental. An estimated 15,000 families or approximately 75,000 individuals directly or indirectly depend on the company. Overall, our presence has immensely contributed to the region’s economic growth, creating a multiplier effect in the local economy by fueling local business supporting the company’s operations as well as serving day-to-day needs of our employees and their families.

Environmental Sustainability
Throughout our history, our company has been active in environmental stewardship and caring for local communities. We firmly believe that sustainability goes beyond corporate social responsibility.

Our Cannery’s Renewable Energy Plant, completed in 2014, converts bio-waste to energy as it cleanses industrial water. It has the potential to generate 5.6MW of electricity which represents 71% of the Cannery’s power demand thus reducing our power cost and improving our carbon footprint.

Within the last 8 years since we monitored our Carbon Footprint (CF), it registered an increasing trend in total carbon capture (sequestration-less-emission). Results from 2008 to 2015 monitoring show that our CF is negative, implying that our operations are consistently eco-friendly. As we continue to shift also our crop protection products towards green label, coupled with application of lower yet effective dosage, our toxicity index is becoming less and less toxic based on the last 10 years of monitoring (2006-2015).

Conservation of Nature
As an agri-based company operating in Mindanao for close to a century, environment conservation is part of our advocacies. We aggressively pursued tree growing efforts. A total of 15,000 trees were planted in 2014 and close to 20,000 in 2015. We had been granted also by the Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources an area of 10 hectares for the reforestation project of Mt. Kitanglad. The project is an agro-forestry coffee production and shall provide employment opportunities for the indigenous people residing near the project. We also commit to continue supply 10,000 seedlings per year for the reforestation of Mt. Kalatungan, the country’s 5th highest peak, home to the Philippine eagle and watershed of Cagayan De Oro river basin.

Talent for Agriculture
Our company cultivates a culture of excellence and value to our people and smallholder farmers as we continue to build on our knowledge and experience in agriculture. Employees and smallholder farmers develop and upgrade their expertise in agriculture by attending Pineapple University (“Pine U”) and Papaya University (“Papaya U”). Pine U and Papaya U, both launched in 2005, offer courses that consider the competency requirements of employees and farmers relevant to pineapple and papaya operation. On the faculty are our senior managers, who count among leading experts in their respective fields.

On top of PineU and PapayaU is our Talent Management which caters to the needed trainings related to leadership, regulatory, technical, functional and organizational development. In 2015, close to 40,000 training hours was rendered, of which 80% are related to functional trainings. The Talent Management has also developed a competency framework that will guide the operation towards achieving the company’s strategic roadmap. The framework pinpoints the specific operational skill each team member must develop to deliver high performance. The framework also serves as a foundation for people program on recruitment, training, career development, succession planning and performance management.

Involvement of Women and Youth
PHILPACK has long recognized the importance of women and youth workers in attaining sustained growth. Since our cannery opened in 1930, women comprise a high percentage of workforce at this site. Our fresh fruit packing houses are also bastions of dedicated women workers representing 73% of total workforce. The youth (ages 18-25) also comprises 26% of the total outsourced workers in the packing house.

PHILPACK is also maintaining an education center that is officially accredited to the Philippine Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). This allows graduates to be easily employed to local companies or work abroad as skilled workers. Through its Technical Skills Training Program (TSTP), it provides employment opportunities for out-of-school youth, unemployed mothers and employees’ dependents. Rural youth comprises a majority of graduates under the TSTP. In 2014, close to 800 graduated from the program of which 80% are youth.

Supporting the company’s corporate mission of bringing to life health and wellness, the training center offers Home Care Education Program (HCEP), a 5-month course that teaches women proper nutrition, child care, family planning, financial management, herbal medicines, livelihood skills, care for the environment, resource regeneration and creativity. The course has been enhanced to include FAITH (Food Always in the Home) encouraging women and employees’ dependents to plant vegetables in their backyard. As a result, many households are now self-reliant for their daily food needs. This program caters 600 beneficiaries from 10 communities per year.

PHILPACK also provides scholarship grants and educational assistance to academically gifted children from underprivileged families. Since its launching in 1955, the program has supported over 2,000 students, many of whom are now key contributors to community growth in the Philippines. The program has also produced Agriculturists who are now supervisors of the company. Thirty nine (39) new scholars for SY 2015-2016 join the 336 scholars from the previous year.

Community Project and Social Multipliers
As we celebrate our company’s 90th Founding Anniversary, we launched the “Project 9” last January 2016. The said project aims to “help the communities where we are” as they welcome PHILPACK into their communities and focus primarily on the provision of vital infrastructures such as 7 classrooms and 2 water systems to selected communities. These projects will be completed within the year.

Our mobile clinic serves one to two barangay communities daily, bringing free medicines and the services of a doctor to communities where medical care is out of reach. We started with 30 barangays in its first year of operation and increased it to 40 barangays in 2015 benefiting close to 21,000 patients.

Areas that cannot be accommodated by our Mobile Clinic are served via our medical and dental missions. In 2015, at least 2,600 individuals in eight remote villages were provided with medical and dental assistance.
