Mexico is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. With a vast territory and a favorable growing climate, the country represents the seventh largest agricultural exporter globally with a huge variety of crops reaching more than 190 countries.

In the Latin American region, the Mexican agricultural sector is the leading producer of vegetables and ranks second only to Brazil in the cultivation of fruit. Agricultural activities therefore play a central role in the country’s economy, representing more than 2% of the GDP and encouraging a stable flow of foreign direct investment (FDI), exceeding more than US$80 million in 2020.

Despite unprecedented disruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic, combined with ongoing international trade and logistics challenges, Mexico’s agrifood exports continue to grow. It is the leading exporter of products such as avocados, tomatoes, squash, mango, and asparagus, and features in the top three for berries, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumber, nuts, lemons, and lettuce. Overall, the agrifood sector reached a production value of US$52 billion in 2020 – an increase of 3.4% compared to 2019 – with exports totaling almost US$40 billion (4.1% more than in 2019).

While Mexico has an impressive foundation – with a network of free trade agreements ensuring access to markets of more than 1.3 billion consumers – the country is facing increasing demands for more environmentally and socially responsible farming practices. This is especially important for its key export markets of the USA, Spain, and the Netherlands.

The GLOBALG.A.P. TOUR stop will reach out to Mexican producers and communicate both the need for internationally recognized certification, as well as the importance of working with a more sustainable model. GLOBALG.A.P. is one of the world’s fastest growing and most widely recognized farm-level certification systems for food safety and responsible farming practices. With 25 years’ experience in the sector, over 200,000 producers have GLOBALG.A.P. certification in 134 countries worldwide.
