Since summer 2017, flowers and plants originating from GLOBALG.A.P. certified farms can be labeled with the GGN consumer label. It enables customers to trace the origin of the plants online. This label will be successively introduced for all ALDI flower and plant products. It is planned that all cut flowers and plants of the two discounters should have a GLOBALG.A.P. Chain of Custody certification by the end of 2019. In addition, a social evaluation will be carried out according to the GLOBALG.A.P. GRASP module (GLOBALG.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice) or comparable recognized standards.

As the first German grocers, the ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD corporate groups have published a flower and plant purchasing policy. The discounters are thus expanding their commitment to sustainability and are committed to ensuring that all cut flowers and potted plants come from sustainable sources. This applies to all plants in ALDI stores as well as the online offer of ALDI Blumen.

“Sustainable products should become a matter of course for retailers and consumers. The floral and plant purchasing policy is another commitment to our holistic sustainability strategy,” says Dr. Julia Adou, Head of Corporate Responsibility at ALDI SÜD. The discounters are committed, among other things, to minimizing the use of pesticides and promoting workers' protection.

“Together with our suppliers, we wish to ensure the cultivation of flowers and plants that preserves both the environment and takes into account the health of workers. Our customers should be able to trace the origin of their flowers transparently,” says Erik Hollman, Head of Corporate Responsibility Non-Food at ALDI Nord.

The purchasing policies that the ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD groups have already published for many relevant commodities and product groups, such as coffee, tea, or palm oil, represent a binding framework for suppliers and business partners. At the same time, they help to formulate the expectations and goals of all those involved in the supply chain.
