20% increase of Producers under GLOBALG.A.P. Flowers and Ornamentals Certification since December 2014.

As of 31 December 2015 a total of 1,264 producers have achieved GLOBALG.A.P. Certification. Most producers come from the Netherlands (+79 – mainly through MPS GAP), Germany (+42), Denmark (+40) and Italy (+35).

The growth potential in the market for certified flowers and ornamentals is promising. Retailers are reacting by offering a greater range of products that meet ecological and/or social criteria.

Standard requirements for environment as well as workers’ health and safety strengthened

The GLOBALG.A.P. Standard Version 5 has been available since July 2015 and was strengthened in the following areas:

  • Handling Plant Protection Products (PPP) – Added criteria and measures to prevent spray drift to and from neighboring plots.
  • Energy Efficiency – Added criteria to help farmers monitor their energy use, reduce the use of non-renewable energy sources, and properly maintain relevant equipment.
  • Pollution Control – The Farm Waste Management Plan now also includes maintaining environmentally safe holding areas for fuel and oil tanks.
  • Responsible Water Use – New criteria that promotes efficient and effective on-farm water management, and ensure producers comply with applicable legal water use restrictions. The Standard also provides a Responsible Water Management Plan and a Risk Assessment Water Management Plan, which become mandatory in July 2017.
  • Social Practices – The V5 Standard strengthens requirements covering the workers’ rights and improves the working conditions of on-farm permanent employees, seasonal workers, piece-rate workers and day laborers. Criteria cover transport of workers on public roads, food storage and rest areas, on-site living quarters, communication, health checks, and control of subcontractors.

The Standard Version 5 will become obligatory from July 2016.

Fruitful cooperation with MPS

The cooperation between MPS and GLOBALG.A.P. now facilitates a synchronized certification solution for the horticulture sector. It enables GLOBALG.A.P. certified producers to participate in the MPS-ABC system in a one-stop solution: two certificates with a single audit, with the additional benefit of having access to the MPS-GAP brand when these assessments are also combined with GRASP or MPS Socially Qualified.

“Our aim is to offer a single point of entry for growers and their retail customers to demonstrate their progress toward sustainability”, explains Theo de Groot, Director of MPS, “ because we recognize the trend toward asking for more data and transparency in combination with good practice (G.A.P.) certification in the coming years.”

The cooperation provides mutual advantages as it gives GLOBALG.A.P. a data analytics add-on and the ability to make use of the MPS Socially Qualified module, while MPS can tap into the network of GLOBALG.A.P.’s certification bodies.
