JCS Fish, the family-owned salmon specialist, has signaled an upweighted commitment to responsibly sourced salmon by becoming the first company in the UK to commit to the GGN aquaculture label for its BigFish range. The first BigFish product to carry the GGN labelling is a fresh salmon fillet which will start to appear in recipe boxes distributed by  Mindful Chef from this month.

In future, BigFish branded salmon products will carry a label with a GLOBALG.A.P. (GGN) number allowing consumers to verify the certified source of the product online. GGN labelling will be rolled out on  BigFish brand products over the next 12 months.

Over 100 years of expertise

JCS Fish is a growing family company founded in Grimsby in 2000 by Andrew and Louise Coulbeck.  It has over 100 years of combined expertise in seafood and fish smoking and specialises in prepared salmon products including the award-winning BigFish™ range, which aims to make salmon more accessible to more people. This includes prepared fillets; breaded salmon goujons and bites and a range of traditionally smoked products, including two which were awarded with two Great Taste Stars in August 2019. JCS Fish has a turnover of around £7M a year and employs 40 people.

Jack Coulbeck, commercial manager at JCS Fish says, “Whilst consumers are increasingly interested in the provenance of their food, there is much confusion about what constitutes a responsible choice, particularly when it comes to farmed fish.  We want to make it simple by ensuring our BigFish products have a third-party certification which guarantees they’v e been farmed responsibly. The GGN label is an important tool for us to deliver on this objective for our salmon.”

Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P., the standard which underpins the ‘GGN certified aquaculture’ logo, says: “GGN.ORG stands for the idea that joint goals are achieved when all those involved work together. Our principles of dialogue, transparency, reliability, and development have helped us support a modern form of aquaculture that is clearly oriented toward sustainability.”

Sourcing ethically and responsibly

Myles Hopper, Mindful Chef Co-founder says: "At Mindful Chef, we care about quality, transparency and sustainability. Sourcing ethically and responsibly is not only incredibly important to us but to our customers as well, which is why we're thrilled to be working with JCS Fish to send out the UK's first GGN labelled products in our healthy recipe boxes. This not only supports our business values, adding further credibility to our service, it also gives customers that extra knowledge on where our ingredients come from.” More information on our GGN Consumer Label for Certified Aquaculture.
