The list of signatories to the “Call to Action to Save the Banana from the Threat of Tropical Race 4 through Good Biosecurity Practices” has grown once more, as the British supermarket chain Tesco becomes the latest to sign. The “TR4 Call to Action” represents a global action plan to save the banana industry from the threat of the banana plant disease Tropical Race 4 (TR4), otherwise known as “Foc 4” or “Panama disease,” by promoting the TR4 Biosecurity Add-on for Bananas.

GLOBALG.A.P.’s TR4 Biosecurity Add-on for Bananas

In response to the spread of the banana plant disease TR4, for which there is no known effective treatment, GLOBALG.A.P. introduced the TR4 Biosecurity Add-on for Bananas in 2017. It was developed in close cooperation with the World Banana Forum (WBF), hosted by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. The add-on provides farmers with a risk mitigation plan to prevent the introduction (and/or further spreading) of the TR4 pathogen to, within, and from their farms under GLOBALG.A.P. certification. Tesco has already been requiring this add-on from their suppliers since the end of 2019 and has now strengthened its commitment to the cause.

Tesco as a GLOBALG.A.P. supporter

Having started as a market stall in London in 1919, Tesco has grown to become the UK’s biggest supermarket. It is now one of the largest retailers in the world and represents an important partner to GLOBALG.A.P. In January 2000, Tesco joined GLOBALG.A.P. as a retail member. Since then, it has been a key stakeholder in GLOBALG.A.P. activities: By sourcing products from certified producers who are subject to high ethical, environmental, and food safety standards, Tesco supports GLOBALG.A.P. in its actions to promote safe, sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Others can also join the fight against TR4

It is only by working together with producers, suppliers, and retailers alike that we can advance preventative measures and stop the spread of TR4. Learn more about the TR4 Biosecurity Add-on for Bananas here and join our “TR4 Call to Action” now.
