Blazquez - Sister Power for a Traditional Family Business

Blazquez SRL is a family-run business located in the province of Tucuman, in the north of Argentina, and was founded in 1938. In 1963, when the father of Ana María and Amelia Melquiades Blázquez passed away, the two sisters decided to continue his agricultural activities – and they are still running the company to this day.

Blazquez SRL originally exclusively produced sugarcane. However, in the early 80s the company started diversifying its business, investing in citrus, and later also cultivated blueberries (2003). In 2010, after acquiring a field in the north of the province, the company also started developing the livestock sector. Blazquez SRL is a member of the export group Frutucuman S.A., with 15 years of experience in the international market.

Since 2004, the company’s lemons, oranges and blueberries are GLOBALG.A.P. certified. Blazquez is one of the first family businesses in the sector to be run by two women, and is therefore something of a figurehead for the UNs Sustainable Development Goal of “achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.” By adhering to the GLOBALG.A.P. Standard, the company shows that it is fully committed to sustainable production, food safety and the environment. In 2015, the company also complied with the GRASP Add-on, adding social responsibility for all employees.
