The Pick n Pay Group is one of Africa's largest and most consistently successful retailers of food, general merchandise and clothing. Today, the Pick n Pay Group has a total of 775 stores, made up of Hypermarkets, Supermarkets and Family Stores (which are franchise stores) and employs over 42,000 people.

Pick n Pay has pledged its determination to provide its customers with the best in safe, high-quality and wholesome foods. With regards to food safety, Pick n Pay’s endeavors ensure that the company:

  • Meets its commitment to ensuring best practice regarding food safety standards
  • Identifies the risks associated with a specific supplier and/or product and mitigates the risks by ensuring that suppliers implement adequate controls, which are verified by auditing their food safety management systems
  • Ensures consumer protection and strengthens consumer confidence
  • Strives to be relevant and active in the continual improvement of industry standards

The company takes brand and product protection very seriously. Being part of the GLOBALG.A.P. community is crucial for Pick n Pay because all its suppliers have to undergo specific audits based on the risk and type of product that they supply.  GLOBALG.A.P. ensures that Pick n Pay can cover most major food fresh produce growers and safety aspects at farming level. Pick n Pay has long adopted this standard as a verification tool for all their suppliers.

Pick n Pay has also welcomed the introduction of localg.a.p., which serves as the stepping stone for safe and sustainable agricultural production. Producers who have received certificates of localg.a.p. compliance are added to the GLOBALG.A.P. Database and given a unique 13-digit localg.a.p. number (LGN). This makes it easier for Pick n Pay to find and work with more emerging suppliers or suppliers who cannot afford the certification audit. Pick n Pay has unlimited access to the database to check and verify the suppliers and growers it works with.

In the future, Pick n Pay envisions a stronger partnership and more project collaboration with GLOBALG.A.P.
