GLOBALG.A.P. TOUR 2017 Uzbekistan

A regional conference titled “GLOBALG.A.P. International Standard – a key factor of access to global market of fruits and vegetables” was held in Tashkent on 13 July 2017.  It was organized by UzAgroExport Joint Stock Company in collaboration with UNDP’s “Aid for Trade in Central Asia” project and the GLOBAL G.A.P. Secretariat.

The purpose of the Conference was to familiarize national and regional producers of fresh fruits and vegetables with requirements, benefits and certification procedures of GLOBALG.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practices), and explore possibilities of its introduction in the country to further enhance the exports of fruits and vegetables to international markets.

Dynamically progressing consumer preferences, requirements set forth by changing regulations in global markets as well as the requirements of international food retail chains have led to emergence of new quality standards for agricultural products, including fruits and vegetables.  Such standards call for minimization of negative environmental impacts of farming operations and production techniques, reduction of the use of chemical inputs and ensuring responsible approach to the use of natural resources.

GLOBALG.A.P. - an international standard, which confirms the fulfillment of such requirements in agricultural production process, has become a key condition for access to international markets of fresh fruits and vegetables. It represents a system of recognized international standards designed to ensure safety of agricultural products and compliance with existing quality and technical requirements.

More than 90 representatives of foreign trade companies, trade support institutions, agro-companies, farms, exporters, certification bodies as well as consulting companies of Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan attended the conference.

One of the Conference participants – Mr. Yorkin Inamov, director of Exim Agro Eco Products LLC said - “During negotiations with European buyers, our company was requested to certify products in compliance with GLOBALG.A.P. international standard, which is the main issue for us now to enter the huge market of the European Union”.

It is remarkable that the Secretariat of the GLOBALG.A.P co-organized the event, which could be an indication of interest to further diversify and increase the importing of fruits and vegetables from the Central Asian region to EU markets.

International speakers of the conference - Mr. Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P Secretariat, Mr. Ignacio Antequerra, Team Leader of Technical Key Accounts of the GLOBALG.A.P Secretariat and Ms. Edite Strazdina from ECR Baltic Consortium delivered presentations on procedures required to implement the GLOBALG.AP standard, certification process, control points, main advantages and benefits for fruit and vegetable producers, as well as the prospects of expanding the supply of fruits and vegetables to EU markets.

“Our main objective is to support Uzbekistan’s producers to diversify their export markets through implementation of international quality standards. Introduction of GLOBALG.A.P. standards is beneficial, in the first place, to farmers as it will serve as a gate to new international markets of fresh fruits and vegetables” said Mr. Kristian Moeller.

During the “round table” meetings, an agreement was reached between the GLOBALG.A.P.  Secretariat and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan on cooperation in the development and implementation of Good Agriculture Practice principles in Uzbekistan, which is expected to further enhance the attractiveness and competitiveness of locally produced fruits and vegetables in foreign markets.
