About GLOBALG.A.P.

Monitoring and Evaluation

We are committed to the sustainable development and long-term viability of the agriculture, aquaculture, and floriculture sectors. Tracking our progress and evaluating our contribution to safer and more sustainable farming practices worldwide is key to improving our farm assurance solutions and maximizing their impact in the future.

Our roadmap for advancing safer and more sustainable farming

What is a theory of change?

A Theory of Change articulates how a vision will become a reality. It details the logical and causal relationships between strategies and activities, as well as their outcomes and impacts.

The GLOBALG.A.P. Theory of Change

We believe that every generation has a right to safe food. To protect this right today and for future generations, the world’s farms must produce safe food in ways that are socially and environmentally responsible and resilient.

We support this belief by collaborating with supply chain stakeholders to foster the global adoption of responsible farming practices through the provision of industry-leading, cost-effective, and value-adding farm assurance and benchmarking solutions.

The GLOBALG.A.P. Theory of Change sets out the strategies we employ in the process.

Certification

Shaped by sector experts and stakeholders from across global value chains, GLOBALG.A.P. smart farm assurance solutions offer a holistic approach to demonstrating safe, socially and environmentally responsible production processes.

The GLOBALG.A.P. certification system is designed to transparently recognize responsible farming practices, and almost 200,000 producers have already committed to this path.

Capacity building

Developing local expertise is essential to encouraging the adoption of safer and more sustainable practices at farm level. Connecting producers – from smallholders to large cooperatives – to regional and international markets is crucial for successful food system transformation.

We empower producers through a range of capacity-building activities aimed at raising awareness of responsible farming practices and facilitating their implementation on the ground.

GLOBALG.A.P. Integrity Program

The GLOBALG.A.P. Integrity Program was founded in 2008 as the first of its kind in food certification.

Designed to ensure the consistent delivery and implementation of GLOBALG.A.P. standards and add-ons worldwide, it monitors and assesses all aspects of the third-party certification process to maintain stakeholder confidence in the GLOBALG.A.P. certification system.

Partnerships and benchmarking

To cut duplication for producers and further simplify sourcing processes, we operate a harmonization program to benchmark farm assurance schemes and checklists around the world against their GLOBALG.A.P. equivalents.

Furthermore, we actively seek cooperation with other scheme and checklist owners to find collective approaches to sustainability challenges and minimize the audit burden on producers.

GLOBALG.A.P. IT systems and smart farm assurance solutions

With the launch of Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) version 6 and the GLOBALG.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice (GRASP) version 2 – offering an outcome-oriented approach to customized checklists – we are entering a smarter and more data-driven era of farm assurance.

The digitalization of our solutions will streamline the certification experience and eventually reduce complexity for stakeholders. The development of our closed-loop IT systems will enhance transparency and improve the integrity of GLOBALG.A.P. certificates.

GGN label

The GGN label, also owned and operated by FoodPLUS GmbH, is a cross-category consumer label that stands for certified, responsible farming and transparency. This helps consumers make more conscious choices that align with their values on the topics of social and environmental responsibility and animal welfare.

Accompanying the logo on product packaging is a unique identification number that can be entered into the GGN label portal (www.ggn.org) to trace the origins of the product. All products with the GGN label come from farms with production processes that are independently audited and certified to the strict criteria of GLOBALG.A.P. standards and add-ons or benchmarked schemes and checklists.

Monitoring and Evaluation System to track long-term progress

Measuring our impact

We believe that GLOBALG.A.P. smart farm assurance solutions contribute to safer food, more responsible farming practices, stronger farming communities, and more transparent supply chains. In order to measure these benefits, it is essential to collect and analyze data that can give accurate and timely insights which inform decision making.

Monitoring and evaluation system

With the introduction of smart farm assurance solutions (our more impact-driven certification solutions), the GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat will begin to receive an increasing volume of data that will create a more accurate picture of the whole certification system.

To effectively harness the power of this data and gain a better understanding of our activities and their impact around the world, we are currently in the process of developing a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) System.

Following internal development, the M&E System will be subject to public consultation before its launch. We estimate public consultation to take place in early 2024.
