Alessandro's Statement

I apply to become member of GLOBALG.A.P. Board first of all to bring the experience of the Italian Fruit and Vegetable sector which is one of the most important in Europe – for volume and quality of production, for number of growers, number of employees, presence on foreign markets, turnover and of course number of producers with GLOBALG.A.P. certification.
Representing one of the most relevant part of the sector and being in strict contact with the entire Italian F&V system, my presence inside the GLOBALG.A.P. Board could be very useful to have firsthand information on the daily work of Global Gap and to immediately transfer this information to Italian growers. Vice versa, having an Italian member inside the Board could be very suitable to deeply understand how Italian growers produce high quality fruit and vegetables in a very differentiated production system.
Environmental sustainability is becoming a major subject for producers. Italian apples producers have promoted a project called “Sustainable Fruit System in Trentino” and have encouraged the creation, inside the Italian Federation of cooperatives, of a specific working group on sustainability. Our presence inside the Board could be very helpful to further guide our producers towards more sustainable agricultural practices.

Professional & Educational Background

After a Master Degree in Agrarian Science in 1985 at the University of Padua, Italy, in 1987 I became professor of Agrarian Science at the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige, now Edmund Mach Foundation.
For 10 years, from 1988 to 1998, I was responsible for the management of the agricultural experimental farm inside the Institute.
Since 1998, I am the Director of APOT- The association of fruit growers in Trentino and in 2004 I have been nominated Director of Assomela, the Italian association of apples producers.

Other affiliations relevant to candidacy

Director of Apot - The association of fruit growers in Trentino - which represents more than 5.000 fruit and vegetable producers who cultivate more than 9.000 ha. The association makes different services for members: the main aim of Apot - directly appointed by regional authorities - is to yearly set up protocols for integrated production and then control and check their application.
Grower – the experience on the field as apple grower, certificated GLOBALG.A.P. since 2007 in option 2, permits to have a first-hand overview of the GLOBALG.A.P. requirements and to understand how the GLOBALG.A.P. certification during the years has fostered a positive evolution in agricultural practices.
I was President of the World Apple and Pears Association (WAPA) from 2009 to 2011 and I am currently a member of experts’ group of Food Quality inside Freshfel, the European Fresh Produce Association.
I’m also member of apples and pears experts group of European Commission, as delegate of COPA-COGECA (Committee of Professional Agricultural Organizations) which represents both the general and specific interests of farmers in the European Union.
