Compound Feed Manufacturing Focus Group

The Compound Feed Manufacturing Focus Group was established to support the process of updating the Compound Feed Manufacturing (CFM) standard.

Purpose and structure

In 2020, the GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat began the process of updating the Compound Feed Manufacturing (CFM) standard to include more sustainability criteria. The Compound Feed Manufacturing Focus Group was established to support this process. The focus group consists of stakeholders who are experts in the field of compound feed manufacturing, the management of feed ingredients, aquaculture and/or livestock production, and related aspects of ecological sustainability.

Activity

Phase 1: April 2020–July 2020

In phase 1, the goal of this focus group was to identify key topics for the new standard version and strategize on how to approach them, for example:

  • Targeting criteria that are specific and applicable to the responsible sourcing of raw materials (agricultural and marine feed ingredients that are sustainably grown and sourced)

  • Identifying areas in the CFM standard that could be strengthened, especially environmental and social activities

  • Identifying criteria which may be difficult to comply with by compound feed producers, understanding the reasons why, and verifying if alternative criteria aimed at the same objective can be included.

Phase 2: late 2020–2021

In phase 2, the focus group revised the new draft of the CFM standard, incorporating the feedback received during public consultation and resolving any other outstanding issues. CFM v3 was launched on 15 December 2021.

Phase 3: 2022–ongoing

In phase 3, the focus group continues to meet and discuss issues surrounding the implementation of the new version. Based on feedback regarding the implementation of CFM v3, the focus group decided that a slight update was needed to make the general rules more practical and to include some further minor points. V3.1 was therefore developed and launched in December 2022. It becomes obligatory as of 1 January 2024. The focus group will continue to monitor feedback on this new version. Producers will progress from v2.2 directly to v3.1.
