GLOBALG.A.P. TOUR 2016 Colombia - Spreading G.A.P Awareness in Times of Peace

Organized by the Corporación Colombia Internacional - CCI, with the support of the Governor of Quindío and the Ministry of Agriculture, the TOUR 2016 stop in Colombia gathered 90 attendees and 20 speakers, including governmental institutions and private sector institutions as well as certification bodies and producers from different regions of the country.

The event was opened by the Governor of Quindío Padre Carlos Eduardo Osorio, who said: "We have a responsibility to ensure, in the situations where people live now, that they produce and consume safe products. This will in turn improve the health of the Colombian population and raise consumer awareness, which will help raise demand for products that are grown and sold in safe and transparent processes.”

During the two-day conference, the delegates and speakers discussed several aspects of implementing Good Agricultural Practices that may affect the certification process, such as chemicals used for crops, responsible water use, and the role of institutions in implementation. Horst Lang, GLOBALG.A.P. Board Member representing retailers/food service and Daniel Catron, GLOBALG.A.P. Senior Expert further elaborated on GLOBALG.A.P. Certification and how the standard fulfills the requirements of international markets.

The example of the MACS (agribusiness, competitive and sustainable models) as a tool that the ICC has implemented to help producers achieve GLOBALG.A.P. and BPA certification together with the COLOMBIAG.A.P seal was highlighted at the event. The model was presented by Adriana Senior, president of the ICC who said: "We believe that the field of producing and marketing products with quality and safety is the country’s key post-conflict revenue generator."

The event also included the participation of the ASOCOLFLORES Guild, which presented its relevant experience with FLORVERDE, the seal for social responsibility.

In addition, the participation of the banana producing and exporting sector was significant, as it is one of the products with the highest number of certifications in Colombia.

Jesus Camacho, CaucaHass legal representative, presented the successful GLOBALG.A.P. certification process of 61 avocado producers. This received much praise from both GLOBALG.A.P. representatives and the conference delegates as an exemplary story of success worthy of being shared around the world.
