GLOBALG.A.P. TOUR 2017 Ethiopia

Ethiopia – Growing towards GLOBALG.A.P. certification

GLOBALG.A.P. hosted, for the third consecutive year, a very successful TOUR  Stop in Ethiopia. It was organized by the Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exports Association (EHPEA), with the kind support from International Promotion Desk (IPD). As per the previous years, the Tourstop was hosted over 2 days, in different locations, to reach as many as possible producers and industry roleplayers that are interested in exporting their products.

On 1 August 2017, the event took place at the Hilton Hotel in Addis Ababa, and the next day, 2 August 2017 in Hawassa, in the southern part of Ethiopia, at the Haile Resort.

Representation included producers (small and large-scale), exporters, government, certification bodies, and other role players from the Ethiopian Agricultural Sector, and included around 130 delegates in total.

Mr Tewodros Zewdie, the Executive Director of EHPEA, welcomed everyone on the first day. He emphized the importance of these days for the development of farming in Ethiopia. Ms Linda Mense, the Expert for Sourcing and Purchase from IPD gave a brief overview on IPD and the important role they play in linking local producers to potential clients in the EU.

Mr Husam Al Dakak, General Manager of Sustainable Trade Bridgers (STB), shared the latest market trends and requirements. He also guided delegates on what to consider when they market and export their products to the EU.

Ms Kerstin Uhlig, a Senior / Key Account Manager at GLOBALG.A.P., did a basic introduction to GLOBALG.A.P. She also highligted why a producer should consider GLOBALG.A.P. certification as part of his business. The new consumer label for Flowers & Ornamentals (GGN Certified Plants) as well as GRASP were introduced.

Mrs Christi Venter, Expert and Product Development - GLOBALG.A.P., explained more about the GLOBALG.A.P. IFA Standard, and emphasized that it can be successfully applied at any size farm, including small-scale level.  She updated the delegates about the current status of GLOBALG.A.P. certification in Ethiopia.  localg.a.p. as a possible capacity building tool was also presented.

Lastly, Mrs Kalkidan Webe from Control Union, one of the Certification Bodies in Ethiopia, explained the GLOBALG.A.P. certification process.

For the afternoon session of both days, delegates had the opportunity to visit a GLOBALG.A.P. certified farm. Jordan River Farm located close to Addis Ababa, and Green Mark Farm, close to Hawassa were visited.
