Capacity building projects

Trade in agriculture safely and efficiently (TRASE)

The GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat and partners worked to build sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) system capacity by increasing tools for IFA implementation among the East Africa Community’s (EAC) partner states to boost trade opportunities.

About the project

Countries: Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, and Kenya

Period: February–September 2021

Project partner: Land O’Lakes Venture37

Objective: The GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat, USDA Foreign Agriculture Service’s Food for Progress program, and the Land o´Lakes Venture37 aimed to build sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) system capacity among the East Africa Community’s (EAC) partner states – to support the region’s agribusiness industry in opening doors to new trade opportunities.

Approach: The GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat supported the TRASE project spread awareness of GLOBALG.A.P. solutions through an introductory session on localg.a.p., and worked to increase capacities through Farm Assurer* workshops and group certification workshops on the Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard for fruit and vegetables. This was combined with mentorship of experts across the various countries to support them in acting as Farm Assurers. *The GLOBALG.A.P. Farm Assurer program was succeeded by the Registered Trainer program in 2022.

SDGs addressed: #3 Good health and well-being and #8 decent work and economic growth

Outcome: A total of 30 experts in the five countries were trained in IFA for fruit and vegetables and in group certification (Option 2), and thus became enabled to work with producers to implement the GLOBALG.A.P. standard.
