Spotlight on sustainability at the world’s leading seafood event

From 6–8 May 2025, over 30,000 aquaculture professionals gathered in Barcelona for this year’s edition of Seafood Expo Global, the world’s largest seafood trade event. Representing a wide range of stakeholders across the aquaculture value chain, GLOBALG.A.P. was proud to be part of the action once again.

Meeting the industry

Throughout the three-day event, visitors were welcomed at the GLOBALG.A.P. booth, where experts from GLOBALG.A.P. were on hand to discuss the organization’s full aquaculture offering. A key focus was on how GLOBALG.A.P. enables responsible aquaculture and supports transparency at the point of sale through the GGN label, a consumer label for certified, responsible farming.

Attendees had the opportunity to learn about GLOBALG.A.P.’s standards, certification processes, and how the organization helps shape a more responsible and resilient aquaculture sector.

Session highlight: From farm to table with the GGN label

A particular highlight of the event was GLOBALG.A.P.’s sponsored session on Tuesday 6 May, titled “From farm to table: GGN label makes responsible aquaculture visible.”

Remko Osterveld from GLOBALG.A.P. and József Bárdos from Metro Food Sourcing talk about the GGN label on stage at Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, May 2025.

Remko Oosterveld, GLOBALG.A.P. Business Development Manager for Aquaculture, unpacked how the GGN label meets growing consumer demand for transparency in seafood production. He was joined by József Bárdos, Quality & Sustainable Development Manager at the Metro Food Sourcing Concarneau Trading Office, who emphasized the value of the robust international certification behind the GGN label. Bárdos highlighted how the label enables transparent verification across the supply chain – all the way back to the farm.

We highly value the independent certification that is represented by the GGN label. It allows us to confidently support responsible sourcing and offer our customers transparency they can trust,” said Bárdos. Since adopting the GGN label across its product range, Metro Food Sourcing has experienced a remarkable 40% sales increase for seabass and seabream, underlining strong customer demand for certified, labeled, and transparent products.

Together, Oosterveld and Bárdos explored how the GGN label promotes responsible aquaculture practices – from animal welfare and food safety to environmentally and socially responsible production and feed sourcing. Attended by producers, traders, certification bodies, and retailers alike, the session highlighted how the GGN label not only supports business objectives but also empowers consumers to make informed choices.

Looking ahead

We would like to thank everyone who stopped by the booth or attended the session. The conversations and connections made at Seafood Expo Global 2025 reaffirm the shared commitment across the industry to responsible aquaculture.

As the dialogue continues beyond Barcelona, GLOBALG.A.P. looks forward to supporting partners worldwide in their sustainability efforts and helping bring more responsibly farmed products to market.
