U.S. Grains Council, a new GLOBALG.A.P. Community Member, is an export market developer for some of the world’s most multidimensional crops – U.S. barley, corn, sorghum, and related products like ethanol. About US Grains Council

The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) develops free and fair trade export markets for U.S. barley, corn, sorghum and related products including distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and ethanol. By working with its members, customers, and stakeholders, as well as building partnerships across international supply chains, the Council plays a crucial role in addressing the challenge of feeding the world sustainably. USGC supports U.S. farmers to expand grain sales globally, while building strong trade policy and advancing food security. They collaborate with USDA and other agribusiness groups, including U.S. grain exporters and trade ambassadors.

Sustainability and transparency goals

Led by farmers and developed by the USGC, the Corn Sustainability Assurance Protocol (CSAP) is an initiative designed to showcase the commitment of growers that continue to adopt processes to improve the sustainability of agriculture. The CSAP offers international corn buyers and export markets insights into U.S. corn production sustainability practices, outlining the U.S. state and federal laws that assure these practices are being implemented.

The initiative also provides recognition that sustainable agricultural production is not the sole responsibility of the producer, but part of a multisystem with many stakeholders along the way.

As stated in the CSAP, corn can be grown in nearly every U.S. state and each year around 90 million acres (36 million hectares) of corn are planted in the U.S., making it an integral crop to monitor and be the focus of the protocol.

A common vision

The USGC sees the importance of GLOBALG.A.P. membership, allowing the organization to continue to align with the global efforts of providing safe and responsible production processes for agriculture and aquaculture supply chains. “The U.S. Grains Council is eager to participate in key global sustainability communities such as GLOBALG.A.P.” Carlos F. Suarez Isaacs, USGC’s Director of Global Sustainability, says. “We can identify an opportunity to work with our stakeholders to continue addressing existing and emerging sustainability requirements across international markets.”

“GLOBALG.A.P. is excited to welcome this member driven organization into the GLOBALG.A.P. community,” said Roberta Anderson, President of GLOBALG.A.P. North America. “We are pleased to collaborate with USGC in promoting responsible farming practices for U.S. corn, sorghum and barley and the food and feed supply chains surrounding these products. We are eager for their contributions to our farm assurance solutions through participation in the GLOBALG.A.P. focus groups and our other stakeholder forums.”
