Capacity building projects

National quality infrastructure project in Nigeria

Local Nigerian experts were trained to understand GLOBALG.A.P. consultancy and assessments in order to build capacities for implementing GLOBALG.A.P. standards throughout the country.

About the project

Country: Nigeria

Period: November 2018 – February 2019

Project partner: United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

Objective: The GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) sought to indirectly support the GLOBALG.A.P. certification process for up to eight farms located near Abuja and Lagos and further strengthen the capacities of local consultants.

Approach: The partners guided two local experts – and aspiring Farm Assurers* – through the assessments and consultancy work needed for certifying producers to GLOBALG.A.P. One of the experts had previously participated in a GLOBALG.A.P. capacity building and Farm Assurer workshop during one production cycle. Three webinars were conducted on topics related to standard implementation – complemented by detailed virtual one-on-one guidance.

*The GLOBALG.A.P. Farm Assurer program was succeeded by the Registered Trainer program in 2022.

SDGs addressed: #8 Decent work and economic growth

Outcome: Five pilot farms were assessed by one consultant. This included the assessment of pulse and cereal production processes, as well as plans for fruit and vegetables in the subsequent season. Four individual farms sought Option 1 certification and one cooperative sought certification under Option 2, which requires having a Quality Management System (QMS) in place.  The consultant intended to continue the implementation process after project ended. He was highly committed to facilitating GLOBALG.A.P. certification and strengthening capacities in Nigeria through public workshops and his involvement in the Nigerian National Technical Working Group (NTWG).
