Avocado farm becomes trailblazer in reduction of rural poverty
Founded in 1962, Grupo Agricola Cuadra is a key part of local heritage in rural Mexico through success as a responsible avocado producer.
Located in a remote rural area, the Grupo Agricola Cuadra has become a local institution, providing a way out of poverty for members of the local population and a way to embrace good agricultural practices to the benefit of the environment.
Founded by Luis Cuadra Hernández, the company has become one of the leading avocado growers in the region and is today run by his son. In 1962, Luis planted the first avocado trees in the area and gave work to local people, benefiting both workers’ quality of life and family welfare while respecting the environment and wildlife.
Based on this foundation, his son has continued the philosophy surrounding the avocado trees that are now more than 50 years old, and works the land with the same enthusiasm and affection. The avocado orchard and its people, in combination with GLOBALG.A.P. certification, are now a part of local heritage.
The farm is GLOBALG.A.P. certified and compliant with GRASP, as well as with other national legal certifications such as the risk reduction systems of the contamination scheme of the Federal Government, recognized by ISO 9001. All have contributed towards making this a truly successful family history.
When people talk about Grupo Agricola Cuadra, it is not just an avocado orchard, it is also part of regional history, and all those involved are particularly proud of its humble origins. The ranch is now emblematic of avocado growing in this area, as it is one of the first avocado orchards in the region with a record production with low environmental impact.
Furthermore, operations have now also spread to other areas with more recent plantings, thus spreading Luis Cuadra Hernández’s philosophy and the GLOBALG.A.P. certification system’s responsible farming practices further afield. In this respect, Grupo Agricola Cuadra has played a small yet vital role towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of “eradicating extreme poverty” in this part of Mexico.
