Economic development, food security and trade in Angola

GLOBALG.A.P. partnered with the IFC to spread awareness of good agricultural practices and GLOBALG.A.P. standards in Angola, in an effort to support state plans to boost the economy, trade, and food safety and security throughout Africa.

About the project

Country: Angola

Period: 2023

Project partner: International Finance Corporation (IFC)

Objective: The role of food safety has never been more central as it is now with increased pressure on agri-food systems. There are growing demands on the global food industry while several East and Southern African nations are currently experiencing acute food insecurity. These global issues are compounded by the fact that many food and farming companies across Africa currently face numerous challenges including limited funding to support the implementation of food safety procedures and good agricultural practices, lack of incentives to improve food safety on domestic markets, and outdated food safety policies and regulations. Since 2023, the International Finance Cooperation (IFC) and GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat have been working to spread awareness of GLOBALG.A.P. standards, promote food safety and good agricultural practices amongst producers, and to and increase the certifications of fruit and vegetable production processes within Angola. Boosting the agriculture industry is a priority of the state for economic development and diversification. Angola hopes to support food security through regional trade in Africa, and to become more competitive by increasing high value exports to Europe.

Approach: GLOBALG.A.P. and the IFC organized and hosted a forum from 20 - 22 March 2023, bringing together private and public sector experts from the Angolan agribusiness sector who had a shared interest in and supporting regional and international trade and responsible farming. The collaboration will continue with the training of agricultural experts in Angola to promote food safety and security, and good agricultural practices amongst producers.

SDGs addressed: #2 Zero hunger, #3 good health and well-being, #8 decent work and economic growth, and #12 responsible consumption and production

Expected outcome: The training and implementation of good agricultural practices aims to increase sustainable business in the sector and provide evidence of risk mitigation. The priority is to boost economic development and trade while increasing food security for people throughout Angola and Africa.
