About the project

Countries: Indonesia and Myanmar

Period: October 2016 and February 2018

Project partner: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)

Objective: The GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat aimed to support the GIZ program standards in the Southeast Asian food trade by facilitating application of food safety standards, particularly in the production of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables.

Approach: The GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat first organized a three-day capacity building and Farm Assurer* workshop conducted for representatives of four different pomelo farms. There were also on-site GLOBALG.A.P. capacity building services at four different pomelo farms, including a pre-audit farm assessment to identify areas of non-compliance with the GLOBALG.A.P Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard.

SDGs addressed: #3 Good health and well-being, #8 decent work and economic growth, and #17 partnerships for the goals

Outcome: In 2018, two of the pomelo farms were GLOBALG.A.P. certified. Activities continued with two additional public workshops open to all market participants in local agri-food systems, allowing private and public actors to learn about the GLOBALG.A.P. standard requirements.  A total of 40 participants ranging from government representatives to consultants received training on responsible farming practices and the principles of third-party certification, as well as practical experience in on-farm assessments. Thereby, the collaboration of GIZ and GLOBALG.A.P. successfully contributed to the further development of food safety management capacities within the different national food systems in South-East Asia.

*The GLOBALG.A.P. Farm Assurer program was succeeded by the Registered Trainer program in 2022.
