GLOBALG.A.P. TOUR 2016  Stop in Ethiopia – A Growing Market for Certification

This year GLOBALG.A.P. returned to Ethiopia to host another TOUR 2016 event, but this time at two separate locations.

On 1 August 2016, the event took place at the Grand Resort and Spa in Bahir Dar, and the next day, 2 August 2016, it took place in Mekele, at the Planet International Hotel. Both these events were organized by the Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exports Association (EHPEA) with kind support from International Promotion Desk (IPD).

Representation included small-scale farmers, exporters, government, certification bodies, and other role players from the Ethiopian agricultural sector, and included around 120 delegates in total.

In Bahir Dar, the day was officially opened by a representative from the Amhara Regional State Trade Industry Development Office.

Mr. Alem Weldegerima, the Director General of the Ethiopia Horticulture Development Agency (EHDA) in Ethiopia, officially opened the day in Mekele.

Mr. Husam Al Dakak, an expert in Sourcing and Purchase from IPD, highlighted the huge potential Ethiopia has to become a competitive country in terms of the export of agricultural products. He stated that the main aim of this TOUR 2016 event was to provide more information to the delegates on the importance of GLOBALG.A.P. certification, in particular, as the first step to obtain access to international markets.

Mr. Constantin Kostyal, an external IPD consultant for Fruit and Vegetables, then specifically focused on the requirements and potential to export fruit and vegetables from Ethiopia to Europe.

Mrs. Christi Venter, Expert and Product Development at GLOBALG.A.P., introduced GLOBALG.A.P. as a standard for food safety and Good Agricultural Practices, and informed the delegates about tools and programs available to improve their process towards GLOBALG.A.P. Certification. She also updated the delegates about the current status of GLOBALG.A.P. Certification in Ethiopia.

Mr. Abdel-Majid Hashlamoun, the General Manager of Alemye Agricultural Investment, shared with the delegates his success story of how GLOBALG.A.P. Certification improved his company. He pointed out that not only did GLOBALG.A.P. give him more market access–as this is always one of the very first requirements to export–but it also helped him to improve his management system on the farm. Mr. Gedion Demisse, the Operations Manager of Alemye Agriculture Development, showed some practical examples on how they successfully implemented some of the GLOBALG.A.P. requirements.

The day in Bahir-Dar ended with a visit to a GLOBALG.A.P. certified farm, Koga Veg Agricultural Development Plc.
