TOUR 2019 Ukraine - Organized by Syngenta Limited Liability Company in partnership with USAID Agricultural and Rural Development Support Project

1-2 July 2019, Ukraine, Kyiv

Ukraine’s Fast Rise as Bread Basket of Eastern Europe

First TOUR Event in Ukraine Organized in Partnership with Syngenta Limited Liability Company and USAID Agricultural and Rural Development Support Project

“Ukraine’s current transformation is highly impressive, as it aims to reclaim its past position as the bread basket of the region. I am certain that farm assurance certification will grow fast in the country, giving the Ukraine access to more international markets. And by considering its collaborative strengths and approaches, the Ukraine is set to become a major contributor to safe and sustainable farming.”
Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P.

The turnout was impressive at the two-day TOUR conference in Kyiv. More than 100 delegates from all over the country gathered at the Park Inn Kyiv, all eager and ready to learn how to upgrade their on-farm production processes and access international markets.

“Facilitating the promotion of good agricultural practices to help make Ukraine a part of the global change for safe and sustainable agriculture and top-quality products is what this event and partnership are aiming for,” said Kirk Ramer, Director of USAID Agriculture and Rural Development Support Project (ARDS) at the conference opening session. He was joined by Ms. Olga Trofimtseva, Acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine; Mr. Kristian Moeller, CEO of GLOBALG.A.P.; and Ms. Olga Verbitskaya, Marketing Manager, Syngenta LLC.

Rich Resources and Shifting Trade Relations: Ukraine’s Growing Export Industry

Ranking fifth in Europe in terms of the production of fruit, vegetable, and berry products, and a leading producer of grain crops, vegetable oil, chicken meat, juices, concentrates, and other products, Ukraine is committed to increasing its cultivation areas, improving product quality, and strengthening its position in international markets.

The country has enormous natural resources and one third of the world's reserves of black soil for the successful cultivation of vegetables and fruits, giving the country a massive export potential of fresh produce.

The most important factor motivating fruit and vegetable producers and processors to improve their on-farm food safety systems and management is the complete reorientation of Ukraine's trade relations. Over the past few years, Ukraine has shifted exports of most fruits and vegetables to the European Union, South Asia, and South Africa. Such a reorientation requires Ukrainian companies to comply with higher standards of production, which in turn requires them to find the best means and resources of production, certification, supply guarantees, and compliance with contracts.

Turning Chaos into an Efficiently Functioning Business

Since the implementation of GLOBALG.A.P. certification in the country, export share has increased by 27 percent, according to Alla Cherche, Head of Quality Control at LLC Dniester Garden, and a speaker at the conference.

Mr. Oleg Naumenko, CEO and co-owner of organic blueberry farm “Big Blue” and also a speaker at the conference, explained how they “assumed that the daily chaos of running a farm was the ‘norm’,” adding that “now that we’re in the process of implementing safety practices and setting up the GLOBALG.A.P. system on the farm, we have finally turned our chaos into an ordered structure.”

He also confirmed that GLOBALG.A.P. certification is not only a science-based approach to food safety that provides access to national and international markets, but it also “reflects learnings from thousands of errors. It is a practical guide for enterprise management,” he added, “and a key to business success regardless of whether you intend to export your products or not.”

Farm Visits: GLOBALG.A.P. in Practice

Organized site visits on the second day of the conference enabled delegates to see first-hand the benefits of implementing the GLOBALG.A.P. system on the farm. Participants visited AUCHAN Ukraine logistics center and the Cooperative Agrovesna, LLC.
