About the project

Country: Namibia

Period: March 2021 - February 2023

Project partner: Namibian Agronomic Board

Objective: The Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) is required by law to promote agronomic industry and to facilitate the production, processing, storage, and marketing of controlled agronomic and horticultural products in Namibia. To achieve this, NAB developed Namibia’s Food Control System for Agronomic and Horticultural Products—an integrated food safety, quality control and traceability system for the management of imported, exported, and local market agronomic and horticultural products. NAB seeks to adopt and integrate the Primary Farm Assurance (PFA) and Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standards from GLOBALG.A.P. as part of Namibia’s system.

Approach: The GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat supported NAB through conducting localg.a.p. awareness-raising sessions. GLOBALG.A.P. also provided Registered Trainer workshops for fruit and vegetables, as well as group certification workshops in quality management systems and internal inspector training which equip NAB inspectors with the necessary knowledge to provide GLOBALG.A.P. farm assurance services. A series of mentorship programs were introduced in 2022 in which GLOBALG.A.P. worked closely with producers to prepare them to independently reach GLOBALG.A.P. standards.

SDGs addressed:  #2 Zero hunger, #3 good health and well-being, and #12 responsible consumption and production.

Outcome: A total of 45 experts were trained in the IFA standard for fruit and vegetables, the Primary Farm Assurance standard, and group certification processes. An additional Namibian localg.a.p. program was also established for selected value chains.
